Signs of aging creep up on us gradually. You may have noticed the creases around your nose and mouth getting deeper or the skin on your jawline starting to sag. While aging affects each of us differently, a facelift is the definitive facial rejuvenation surgery. This procedure corrects skin laxity and other signs of aging for a more youthful appearance.
What is a Facelift or Rhytidectomy?
A facelift or rhytidectomy reverses signs of aging for a dramatically younger look. This procedure lifts the skin and underlying support structures to create a smoother, defined appearance. A facelift targets the mid and lower face, especially deep wrinkles, sagging, and loss of definition. It also improves the appearance of the neck and jawline to look slimmer and more contoured.

*Individual results may vary.
How is a Facelift Done?
Dr. Schalit typically performs a facelift with local anesthesia and IV sedation. This prevents you from feeling or remembering anything about the procedure, which can take two to three hours. In some cases, general anesthesia may be used.
During rhytidectomy, Dr. Schalit makes incisions inside the hairline and around the ears. These incisions allow him to lift the skin, remove excess, and tighten it over your facial structures. He will also remove or reposition pockets of fat to provide a more youthful, sculpted profile. After lifting and tightening the skin, he uses sutures to close the incisions. You will rest in the recovery area until Dr. Schalit releases you to go home.
What Can a Facelift Treat?
Part of a facelift’s popularity comes from its ability to address many signs of aging in one surgery. Concerns treated by a facelift include:
- Loss of volume in the cheek area
- Loss of facial definition
- Skin laxity and sagging
- Drooping jowls
- Loose neck skin
- Nasolabial folds (from the corners of the nose to the mouth)
- Marionette lines (around the corners of the mouth)
- Other lines and wrinkles
A facelift does not address concerns about the eye area, brows, or forehead. It may also not provide the level of neck correction you desire. Fortunately, a facelift pairs well with many other procedures.

What Other Procedures Can I Have With a Facelift?
Combining other procedures with a facelift has several advantages. You will only have to undergo one surgery and one recovery period. In addition, you may save some money since you will not have separate expenses for each one. The most popular procedures to combine with a facelift include:
- Neck lift
- Brow or forehead lift
- Eyelid lift or blepharoplasty
- Chin augmentation
- Rhinoplasty
- Injectables
- Laser skin resurfacing
- Chemical peels
Combining surgical and non-surgical treatments will help you achieve your desired smooth, glowing skin. The right combination of procedures depends on your concerns and goals.
Am I a Good Candidate for a Facelift?
Facelift candidates range in age from their 40s to their 70s. Good candidates should have no major health problems and reasonable expectations. A facelift is the best treatment option for those who want to address significant sagging and deep lines. Only a consultation can determine whether you are a good candidate.
This was well worth it. To be able to take years off of my appearance was worth every penny to me. I would not even hesitate to do it again after going through the experience and knowing the outcome. There was some discomfort for a few days, but I slept most of the time the first few days after the procedure. I look so much better. Dr. Shalit specializes in faces which is what I wanted. The results show his expertise.
