What is Botox® Made Of?
Botox® is made of botulinum toxin – a paralysing agent made by the bacterium, Clostridium botulinum. It has unique properties that allow it to tackle the dynamic lines and wrinkles on your face, including crow’s feet, laugh lines, frown lines, forehead lines and worry lines.
How Does it Work?
Botox® works by inactivating the muscles under the face that cause fine lines and wrinkles. The FDA-approved substance is injected strategically into the areas you’d like to target, pausing the underlying muscle tissue, preventing it from creasing the skin on top.
Specifically, Botox® works by blocking the neurotransmitter, acetylcholine. When this chemical can no longer function, the brain does not send signals to the affected muscles, preventing them from tensing. Dynamic wrinkles caused by muscle movement cannot occur.
Is Botox® Safe?
Given that the full name for Botox®, botulinum toxin, has the word “toxin” in it, many patients worry about safety. However, the treatment is widely regarded as one of the safest cosmetic interventions available, having been granted FDA clearance all the way back in 1989.
The word “toxin” mainly derives from the properties of Botox® when administered in large quantities. However, Dr. Schalit and his team of expert injectors only use tiny amounts – just enough to inactivate target muscles.
