Ear Surgery

It is possible that minor deformities of the outer ears could bother you or a child. Otoplasty creates a more natural shape of the ear that has profound benefits on appearance and self-confidence. Children born with ear deformities can benefit from ear surgery as early as the age of five.

About Ear Surgery

Ear surgery (otoplasty) is usually done to set prominent ears back closer to the head or to change the shape or reduce the size of large ears. This is commonly referred to as “ear pinning.” For children, protruding ears can often be a source of teasing, which can lead to humiliation and embarrassment that stays with them through adulthood. Ears are typically fully developed by age 4 to 6, so the sooner you choose to have ear surgery, the better.

Ear surgery begins with a small incision in the back of the ear, which allows your surgeon to sculpt the exposed cartilage before repositioning it closer to the head. Another technique involves removing the skin and folding back the cartilage rather than removing it.

In some cases, a more drastic approach is necessary. For total ear reconstruction, your surgeon will develop a framework from the ribs, as well as skin grafting. During your initial consultation, your surgeon will discuss all these options with you.

The most common side effects following otoplasty are swelling, numbness, discomfort, or headaches, but all of this should disappear within the first few days. You’ll need to wear a bandage around your head for the first few days as well, and you should refrain from any strenuous activity during this time. Most importantly, you’ll be advised to refrain from bending your ears for at least a month post-surgery.

Ear surgery patients are some of the happiest patients that we treat, as the procedure can truly have a profound impact on a child’s life. They no longer have to be embarrassed by their large or protruding ears, and they have a much more balanced overall appearance. Children are typically the best candidates for ear surgery, as their ears are very pliable and easier to shape. However, anyone experiencing humiliation or is self-conscious about their large or protruding ears may be a good candidate for the procedure. The earlier you can have this surgery, the better, as ears are typically done developing by age 4 through 6.
