Rhinoplasty, also known as a nose job, is one of the most common facial surgery procedure. This procedure helps with difficulty breathing or improves the aesthetic of your most prominent facial feature. Rhinoplasty changes the shape of the nose. Whether too big, too small, too wide or not wide enough, a nose job can help boost your confidence and give you a new look. But how long will it take for you to recover from the process?
What to Expect With Rhinoplasty Recovery
Rhinoplasty is done using two main techniques: open or closed. With a closed rhinoplasty, Dr. Schalit makes a small incision inside the nose. Open rhinoplasty involves an incision to the columella–the tissue separating the nostrils. Whether open or closed, these incisions will not be noticeable.
After the surgery, you will be able to return home immediately. You will wear a nasal splint which may cause a feeling of a stuffy nose, but breathing through the mouth will not be hindered. Bruising and swelling after rhinoplasty surgery are completely normal. The bruising will disappear after a week, and the swelling will begin to subside after three to four weeks. Your nose will have fully recovered with its new shape in about a year.
What to Do After Having a Rhinoplasty
Recovery from rhinoplasty surgery varies from person to person. Dr. Schalit recommends a week to ten days to recover from the surgery before returning to work and lighter activities. The recovery process will take longer if you have a more strenuous job. Dr. Schalit also recommends using a nasal spray to keep your nose clean in the recovery process and keep your head raised above your chest while sleeping.
For a minimum of four weeks after the surgery, avoid placing any pressure on your nose, whether blowing your nose or wearing sunglasses or eyeglasses. Any pressure on the nose may hinder its healing. Lastly, smoking is highly discouraged as this will slow down the healing process and increase your risk of infection.

Am I a Candidate for a Rhinoplasty?
Anyone in good health and desires a more balanced aesthetic to their appearance are a fantastic candidate for rhinoplasty. Beyond cosmetic purposes, if you struggle with breathing problems or a congenital disability, a nose job may be highly beneficial to improve your everyday life. During the consultation period, Dr. Schalit will talk with you about what you want and what is best for you.
Dr. Schalit does not recommend patients under 15 years of age to get this procedure due to their noses still developing. Furthermore, any smokers are not recommended for the surgery unless they are able to commit to quitting smoking during the healing period.
