Exfoliation is one of the critical factors in maintaining healthy skin. The skin cells that reach the surface of your skin are often already dead, causing a dull, discolored, or uneven appearance. Microdermabrasion is an exfoliation treatment to sand away the dead skin cells to reveal the bright, healthy, living cells underneath.

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is an FDA-approved mechanical exfoliation to remove dull, dead skin cells. This minimally invasive procedure renews overall skin tone and texture for most skin types and tones.

The appointment lasts around an hour in Dr. Schalit’s comfortable skin care facilities. After cleaning your skin, the technician uses a handheld device to gently exfoliate the outer layer to treat sun damage, fine lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores, age spots, and other skin concerns and conditions.

How Much is Microdermabrasion?

According to the American Society for Plastic Surgeons, microdermabrasion treatments cost an average of $167 in 2020. The cost of microdermabrasion treatments varies depending on the experience and qualifications of your provider, the type of microdermabrasion, the length of the procedure, and the geographic location. Medical insurances do not typically cover treatments.

Is There Any Downtime With Microdermabrasion?

There is little to no downtime for microdermabrasion treatments. You may experience some redness and sensitivity that typically fades within an hour. While your skin heals, avoiding harsh treatment products and washing your skin with unscented soap is best.

It is best to avoid applying topical acne medications for 24 hours after your appointment. Even if you do not go into direct sunlight, it is best to wear sunscreen after your treatment, as your skin will be more sensitive for a few weeks.

What Results Will I See With Microdermabrasion?

You may see results immediately after your appointment with a dramatic improvement in your skin tone, texture, and color. While you may see your ideal results after one treatment, most people see optimal results after a series of treatments and following a proper at-home skin care regimen.

Am I a Candidate for Microdermabrasion?

You may be a candidate for microdermabrasion if you want to treat age spots, sun damage, small scars, enlarged pores, or dark pigmentations. Microdermabrasion treatments cannot treat heavily damaged skin.

If you suffer from active acne, warts, rosacea, a recent herpes outbreak, unstable diabetes, or other auto-immune disorders may not be a good candidate for microdermabrasion. The best way to know if you are a candidate for microdermabrasion is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Schalit
