Otoplasty is a common procedure designed to correct the shape of the outer ear (also called the auricle). But how much does it cost?

Average Cost of Otoplasty

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the average cost of an otoplasty – or cosmetic ear surgery – is $3,220. However, this figure does not include the cost of anesthetics, operating room rental, or other related expenses, such as gowns.

Factors that Influence Otoplasty Costs

How much you actually wind up paying will depend on a range of additional factors. For instance, going to an experienced surgeon costs more than one with less experience.

Likewise, the location of the otoplasty impacts the final price you pay. In some parts of the country, clinical expenses are higher, pushing up the cost.

The amount you pay will also depend on further expenses related to the surgery. These could include medical tests to make sure that you are a suitable candidate, prescription medications, and the fees of other medical professionals. Clinics will usually itemize these, adding them to the final bill.

Benefits of Otoplasty

While there is a cost associated with getting an otoplasty with Dr. Schalit, it provides a host of benefits. These include:

  • Reduction in how much ears stick out: While there is nothing wrong with ears that stick out, it can make some people feel self-conscious about how they look, damaging their quality of life. Otoplasty – sometimes called “ear pinning” – changes the angle of the outer ears so that they don’t protrude as much, restoring the patient’s confidence.
  • Reduce the size of ears: Some patient’s outer ears are too large for the rest of their heads. Therefore, they sometimes use otoplasty to reduce the size of their ears. This procedure involves removing some of the tissue in the auricle and then stitching it back together.
  • Improve on previous ear surgeries: Dr. Schalit often performs corrective otoplasties, designed to improve on prior surgeries. He works with the existing tissue, correcting errors where necessary, and ensuring that your ears take on the form you want them to.

Am I a Candidate for Otoplasty?

Otoplasty is a surgical procedure. Therefore, patients must not have any life-threatening illnesses or be in poor health before they undergo the operation. In addition, they must not have any chronic ear infections that surgery could make worse.

Otoplasty is not suitable for children under the age of five. That’s because the cartilage in the ear is still developing and growing and hasn’t reached full size.

Patients should also be prepared to follow a set of instructions. Successful otoplasty requires following all of the aftercare procedures, including ensuring that you keep your surgery covered in a protective bandage for support. Your ear will likely feel uncomfortable and itchy while it recovers. It is critical that you do not touch it in this phase as it may impede the healing process. Always take any medications Dr. Schalit prescribes or recommends.
