While the ears are more known for their practical uses, cosmetics allow for improvement in the overall appearance of your ears. Protruding ears can be a source of embarrassment for many children and adults. Otoplasty allows you or your child to improve the ears’ appearance with only one long-lasting procedure.
What is Otoplasty (Ear Surgery)?
Otoplasty, also known as ear surgery, is a cosmetic procedure to change your ears’ shape, position, or size. Protruding or oddly shaped ears can be a source of teasing and embarrassment for many children, lasting long into adulthood. Otoplasty may also improve the appearance of ears due to trauma or injury.

What Should I Expect with Otoplasty?
Depending on the corrections needed, Dr. Schalit utilizes various techniques to improve your ears’ shape. During your initial consultation, Dr. Schalit discusses all your surgery options. The surgery itself may take 1-3 hours.
Most surgeries involve a small incision on the back of the ear to allow Dr. Schalit to remove and remodel cartilage or skin. Some techniques may not require the removal of any cartilage. If you are doing a complete ear remodeling, you may require skin grafting and more invasive surgical procedures.
How Long is Recovery from Ear Surgery?
Recovery from otoplasty may last up to a few weeks. You will wear bandages for protection and support for the first few days. The head bandages will be removed after a few days. After removing the bandages, you may notice your ears experiencing some swelling and redness. Dr. Schalit may recommend sleeping with a special headband for a few weeks to prevent pulling on your ears when you roll over.
During otoplasty recovery, you should avoid sleeping on your side, rubbing your ears, or placing excessive pressure on the stitches. Until Dr. Schalit gives the green light, you should refrain from strenuous activities. Before returning to normal activities such as exercising or bathing, discuss them with Dr. Schalit to prevent any problems during your recovery.

Am I a Good Candidate for Otoplasty (Ear Surgery)?
You may be a good candidate for otoplasty if you struggle with protruding ears or ears that are too large or small due to genetics, trauma, or injury. If you have previously received surgery but are displeased with the results, you may also be a good candidate for otoplasty.
Children over five are ideal candidates since their ears are more pliable, making them easier to shape. The earlier a child receives surgery, the better. If you are interested in ear surgery for yourself or your child, a consultation is the first step.
