Do you feel self-conscious about ears that are too big or protruding too far? If you’re interested in otoplasty to correct overly prominent ears but are wondering about recovery, keep reading to learn what you should expect before, during, and after your procedure with Dr. Schalit.

What is Otoplasty (Ear Surgery)?

Otoplasty, or cosmetic ear surgery, is a procedure to correct the ears’ size, shape, or position. This is also sometimes referred to as “ear pinning” if the ears are being brought closer to the head. Large or protruding ears can distract from a person’s profile and facial appearance and may be a source of embarrassment or even teasing, especially in children.

How Does Ear Surgery Work?

Dr. Schalit is board-certified and highly experienced in a variety of cosmetic procedures, including otoplasty, to help his patients feel confident in their appearance. During your consultation, he will assess your concerns, help you determine the best treatment plan, and explain the procedure.

Otoplasty is typically performed with local anesthetic and oral sedation and takes one to three hours. Dr. Schalit will usually make incisions behind your ear, hidden within the natural creases. Depending on your unique needs, he will then reduce the size of the ears, draw them closer to the head, shape the cartilage, or use a skin graft to increase the ears’ size.

How Long is Recovery After Otoplasty?

After your ear surgery, you’ll need to wear bandages around your head and take it easy for a few days. You’ll likely experience some discomfort and swelling, but this should resolve within a week.

Most patients can return to work or school after approximately a week. Full recovery after otoplasty takes a month or more, during which time you should refrain from strenuous activities. Dr. Schalit will guide you through the healing process and let you know when you can resume all your normal activities.

Otoplasty Results

Once your bandages are removed a few days after surgery, you’ll see an immediate difference. Most patients are very satisfied with their otoplasty results, and often feel like their ears finally fit their head. The results of ear surgery are permanent, so you’ll never need to worry about your ears again.

Am I a Good Candidate for Ear Surgery?

Patients seek out ear surgery for various concerns, such as ears that are too large or small, overly prominent, misshapen due to injury or from birth, asymmetrical, and more. Otoplasty is also an option for children with ear problems since the ears finish developing at an early age. Healthy adults or children over the age of five with large or protruding ears may be good candidates for otoplasty.
