Lines and wrinkles come with the aging process, but you can smooth them away with injectable treatments. Botox® and dermal fillers both address lines and wrinkles, but they work on different types of lines.
What is Botox®?
If you have concerns about wrinkles across your forehead, between your brows, or around your eyes, Botox® may help. Botox® addresses dynamic lines and wrinkles that make you look older and more tired. These form when your facial expressions cause muscles under the skin to pull and crease it. Botox® uses botulinum toxin, a compound that temporarily stops nerves from sending signals to muscles. When the muscles relax, these dynamic wrinkles soften and smooth.

What are Dermal Fillers?
Static lines and wrinkles result from lost collagen allowing the skin to lose firmness. These lines make an excellent target for dermal fillers. We offer the Juvederm® family of dermal fillers, which contains fillers to restore volume, enhance the lips, and smooth lines and wrinkles. Juvederm® dermal fillers use hyaluronic acid, a molecule that attracts moisture into the skin.
Botox® vs. Dermal Filler: What’s the Difference?
While both will smooth away your lines and wrinkles, Botox® and dermal fillers have many differences. Your concerns will help you decide which one will work best for you, and some people choose to have both.
Botox®
- Treats dynamic lines and wrinkles (expression lines)
- Relaxes muscles
- It takes several days to take effect
- It lasts three to four months
- Safe for repeated use
- Administered as a series of injections
Dermal Filler
- Treats static lines and wrinkles from skin laxity
- Plumps the skin
- Immediate results that improve over a few days
- It lasts six to 18 months, depending on the type of filler
- Also administered as injections
Since most people develop both types of wrinkles with age, having Botox® and a dermal filler together has become more popular. Since they work differently, having both together is safe and effective.

Is There Any Downtime With Botox® or Dermal Filler?
You can expect to have no downtime with Botox® or dermal fillers. You may notice some soreness or bruising around the injection sites with each. These will disappear in a few days. You can resume normal activities after treatment.
Am I a Good Candidate for Botox® or Dermal Filler?
Botox® and Juvederm® have extensive safety records, and most people make good candidates for one or both. If your primary concern is dynamic wrinkles, your injection specialist may use Botox®, while dermal fillers may have more success if you have concerns about static wrinkles. You may not make a good candidate for Botox® if you have certain medical conditions.
